Famous last Words:

I have exclusively used the Tarot of Trees for the last 2 months. Looking through the deck I an surprised to note, that there were a few cards, that never came up in readings or daily draws:

The Page of Wands

The Wheel of the Year

The World

and the 6 of Pentacles with the 3 Squirrels

Then there were the Queen of Swords,

the Queen of Pentacles

and the 8 of Pentacles, that showed up A LOT!!!!

So this morning I did a meditative “reading” with both these sets of cards……..

What does that tell me? -kind of thing…..

Then I have to name my favourite image of this deck: This award hands down goes to the Hierophant, a beautiful large Tee in its prime standing amid a natural landscape.

Hierophant

I also have a few candidates for the “sour lemon design” award, but the prize goes to the 6 of Cups.

This – ??sixofcups_lg

What is this anyway??

A stand that you hang your coats up on and that someone put outside on the lawn for the spring yard sale?

Now the thing is holding up 6 cups of dripping Strawberry ice cream???

You be the judge…….

What I loved about this deck was – shuffling it! : Small, slick – and these beautiful backs!

It was a treat to handle the deck every morning 🙂

However, my shuffle-mania also exposed the decks weakness: The black borders I soooo like are now showing white on the sides, some cards look more “scuffed” than others…..

If I want to preserve the deck for an occasional treat, it is time to put it into its little wooden vintage box and find a place for it among the other decks of my card library.

On the path of Change

Reading of change:

Tarot of Trees

What do I need to do: 8 of cups:eightofcups_lg

A Tree grows in a narrow canon. To reach the light it has to stretch higher and higher towards a waning Moon in the sky. The higher it gets, the more room it has for its branches to unfold.

I have to stretch myself and grow. Towards more light and intuitive wisdom. The plants at the bottom of the canon are blooming, which tells me that my Tree of growth is rooted in fertile ground.

The waning moon also tells me it is a time for letting go of restrictive views and behaviours.

The 8  cups are passively standing on rock terraces. It looks, as if my Tree will out-grow them, leave them behind. = moving on from where I was, taking the high road up.

What are my assets: 9 of pentacles:nineofpentacles_lg

A mighty Tree. Only its lower trunk and its root system are visible. A thin blanket of snow is on the ground.

9 pentacles are nestled within the roots.

9 of pentacles is the “rich lady card” in other decks. Financial security, prosperity and a comfortable life. Yes, I have all those things. But specifically concerning my question, this card tells me, that deep within the roots of my being I have all the tools and gifts required to make and effect a necessary change. These gifts will nurture me through it, when I use them well. This is the time of winter and so the time, when I actually HAVE time – for myself and for personal work.

Work on and within my own inner root system.

What are my weaknesses: 4 of Swords

A Tree in late fall has lost all its leaves. they will provide the mulch and then humus for futur growth in the seasons to come.

This Tree  has gone through several radical changes its trunk is bend and uses 4 swords in order to stand stable and not topple over. It looks rested and perfectly balanced…. but……

If the Swords fall, so does the Tree.

At some time this Tree took a beating, but for now it overcame it and kept growing. The 4 swords became its allies and helpers.

Yes, I am in the autumn of my life and I had to change directions several times. But it has not kept me from growing. I too have helpers, my Miahanits…

Yes, without them I am lost – just like this Tree. But these swords also stand for the mind.

4 different mental strengths are needed, to sustain me – like the Tree – through a long time of external dormancy – winter – until the next spring, when I have to grow and produce (new leaves) again.

To me these 4 powers of the mind are:

– Contemplation of what I have to and WANT to change

– Meditation

– Trance journeys to consult my Miahanits

– perseverance in/ for daily practice

Strange!?

Magician

I am looking at he image of card 1= The Magician

A raspberry red Tree.

From it are hanging the attributes of the Magician: cup, sword, Pentacle and Wand.

All the Flowers below the Tree expectantly raise their yellow heads, as if ready for something to happen and I have to admit, I am ready too. But- the whole image feels static to me. No movement…..

To me the Magician is about movement, the ability to affect change, action….

Here I see – waiting…. for the act to …maybe… happen….. sometime……

.

With the VII the Chariot I have a sort of sinking feeling:Chariot

The Tree – like the Fool stands at a steep cliff and there is quite a storm brewing, making the leaves fly. The branches of the Tree are all blown in one direction – Soon this Tree, which is not anchored down into the Earth, will be blown of that cliff…

…But is that a good symbol for the Chariot?

Is that movement forward – in the right direction???

Is that fighting so as not to loose control or is this the Fool becoming the Tower ?

Is this the Tower about to topple?

Bold Move!

Knight of Wands:    knightofwands_lg

A bold green Tree growing in the middle of the road!

??

How did THAT happen??

This does not look like an old road, long out of use, that is reclaimed by Mother Nature.

It looks more like a wooden board walk – through a swampy area, maybe an old lake bed. The landscape gently rises in the background, up into green hills.

The Tree’s Roots however are nit anchored into the roadway – nor are they connected to the surrounding lime green ?? meadow?? or whatever it is supposed to be.

This to me looks like an image out of one of my shamanic trance journeys.

Otherworldly.

As a Tarot card – as the knight of Wands, it works for me! 🙂

A bold brazen Tree, stepping out of its comfort zone.

But is is wise?

Will there be repercussions?

Will the repercussions of this bold move be more significant than the advantages?

With the Knights it is always the question.

Let the journey continue, so I can find out.

😉

10 of Swords:

10 of Swords:   tenofswords_lg

It is over!

Yes, Mi-Shell, OVER!

Finished, done!

Move on!

Move beyond it!

Yes, but….”

No yes, but, no ifff, no wait a moment….

Over is over!

You may be having trouble wrapping your head around it, but that does not change the FACT: It is over. Dead, done…

It hurts….. !!!!!!!  😦

THAT is, what the blood on the card is about….

I am still mulllllllling about it,

How did this happen?

How could it have been prevented,

Iffff only…..

But the dead hollow trunk and the loooooong dead roots show me clearly, what deeo inside i had sensed, suspected for quite some time….

That this ending was inevitable. No accept it!

Get over it!

Get over yourself!!!!!

And MOVE ON!!!!

Wrong metaphors?

devil_lg

 XV the Devil:

A purple ominous looking sky is the backdrop for a gnarled old Tree, that someone meticulously put into chains and shackles. It certainly was not the raven, who sits in its upper branches. But maybe he knows, who actually is supposed to be the devil here. The old Tree? Is it even still alive? Are these shackles there, to prevent it from falling over? If it is still alive and we are looking at a winter’s evening then these chains certainly do not prevent any growth come spring. The upper branches are unchained and growth always happens upward and outward. Nothing impeding that growth here.

The Raven/ or Crow does not look all that devilish to me either. Sure, Big Bad Black Birds usually get a bad rap in western culture – as being harbingers of bad omens, death and deviousness. But this specimen here to me, seems to rather just be perplexed by the situation it flew into.

So, who/ what is the Devil here?

The one, that put the chains onto the Tree, in a vain attempt to -?? what?? keep the tree from growing??

keep it from falling over? Or maybe because this is HIS? HER Tree and someone might steal it?

Has this person – yes, it has to be a person, because Cats, Dogs, Chipmunks or Squirrels do not do this kind of thing to a Tree – Has this person chained the Tree, to keep it save from loggers, as again, it is all alone and no specimens of its or any other kind are in the image?

What’s up with chains and shackles anyway? What is this metaphor supposed to tell us?

It appears quite often in Devil cards.

BUT Let me tell you. Chains and shackles can ever only restrain/ bind/ tie down the physical body of a living Being. The mind and the Soul are still free!

I KNOW, because I have been shackled and chained – as a 12 year old for days and days, in the orphanage, to the wet floor of the common shower room, hands behind my back, chained to my ankles, kneeling naked on the tiled floor with a dripping faucet above me. Why? Good question. To make me regret, that I publicly refused to be baptized (in the Catholic church) to make me give in and give up my shamanic belief system… It did not work. Sure, I got sick, deadly so, but I survived and …Well, read my Blog “shamanic drumm and you know, ultimately what it did is make my clan Guardian come in and protect me….

Same with others, who have been chained and shackled:

Nelson Mandela!

Eventually they had to let him go and … we all know, how he led South Africa into freedom.

Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist, who is wrongfully and for political reasons accused of having shot an FBI agent is still in shackles – since 1973…But his Spirit is unbroken…..

There are others, I am sue you know of a few…

so, the question I am asking here is, are chains and shackles the right visual metaphore to convey the meaning of Devil card in Tarot?

Dana Driscoll, creator of the Tarot of Trees writes about this image:

The Devil is represented in a tree, that is bound.

Its branches are weighted down by chains and no growth is possible. No life is to be had in this tree….

As you just read, I do not see that at all!

Dana further writes:

The Devil is about entrapment, slavery, bondage and hopelessness…..

Well, I have a feeling, Dana has NEVER BEEN chained down and bound.

Because if she had, she would know, that chains do not chain anything!

Broken Branches

My card of the day:

5 of Cups:

fiveofcups

Oh!

My first response is :

What a sad picture!

It immediately reminds me of the Typhoon ravaged Trees in the news clips about the Philipines these days.

And of course the immeasurable hardship the survivors, human and none human are suffering. through.

Looking a little more towards myself I also sense the sadness over all the losses that I have experienced in my life. And yes, also the loss of “my time”

I am in my 57th year- for another month and sooooo much life is already passed by… The broken branches speak of things I had to loose, prune, cut….. gifts and Blessings too – represented in the image by the Cups still in the grip of the broken of branches….

But after each storm , even the ones that severely prune a Tree, there is a new up-surge, new growth!

The 2 cups held high symbolize the continuation of life, they also make me think of Peter and me, still close and held up by strong love and a nurturing partnership.

Towards new Growth we raise our cups!

.

.

Oh! just as I am contemplating this, my card of the day….

my eyes are drawn outside my panoramic window and I witness first 1 Raven flying by….

then 2, … 3

then 4

…5…6..

7…!!

Raven_2735_e

7 Ravens

flying North

What does it mean?

What will come forth?

7 Ravens flee from the sun

A Murder of Ravens!?

A dark deed is done!
